Woman escapes injury as SUV slides into creek

JACKSON TWP — A young woman escaped injury late Tuesday night after she lost control of her sport utility vehicle, sheared off a utility pole and slid into a creek near the Jackson Township-Evans City line, authorities said.
“She was pretty lucky she wasn’t hurt,” said Chief Mark Adomaitis of the Evans City Volunteer Fire Department.
Investigators did not immediately release the name of the woman, who is from Jackson Township and believed to be in her 20s.
The woman was traveling on Kaufmann Road near Pattison Street shortly before 11 p.m. when her Chevy SUV apparently skidded on the ice-covered road, authorities said.
“The vehicle hit a guardrail and telephone pole before it flopped down on the embankment and slid down into a creek,” said Evans City Police Sgt. Don Myers.
Evans City police were initially dispatched to the crash due to it proximity to Jackson Township. Jackson police arrived a short time later.
Myers was first there and saw the vehicle on its passenger side in the creek. The creek, which is about 3-feet wide, had about 8 inches of water in it.
The woman was attempted to get out of the SUV but could not open the driver’s door.
Myers got down the embankment and opened the door for her.
“I carried her across the creek to the other side and handed her over to (Adomaitis),” Myers said.
Adomaitis took her the rest of the way up the hill.
By then, the woman’s father had arrived and took her home.
