SV series promotes science, careers
Professionals share insights with students

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley Science Honor Society recently created a lecture series designed to further immerse students in science, technology, engineering and math.
The STEM lecture series gives students the opportunity to hear firsthand from professionals working in one of those given fields.
While the series is off to a fast start, the district also is looking for more speakers to address students in the coming months.
The district already has hosted several speakers, among them being software engineer Josh Suereth.
A former employee of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and also of Google, Suereth talked to the students about his work in detecting security anomalies in computers and encouraged them to pick a career in the STEM field.
Students also are provided with networking opportunities with those professionals and are given the chance to shadow the lecturers in their jobs.
The next speaker scheduled is Cynthia Morton, the associate curator of botany at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. She will address students in January.
