3 hurt in 4-car crash on Rt. 228
MIDDLESEX TWP — Three people were hurt Tuesday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash on Route 228 east, police said. All those injured were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh with moderate injuries. Police said the crash happened about 4:20 p.m. when an eastbound 2012 Jeep Wrangler driven by Kyle Walters, 39, of Saxonburg rear-ended a 2006 Toyota Avalon driven by Bernard Kapus, 62, of Gibsonia. Kapus' vehicle was stopped behind a 2001 Jeep Wrangler driven by Donald Lynch, 60, of Valencia, which was stopped to make a left turn onto Mekis Road. The rear-end collision pushed Kapus' car into the back of Lynch's vehicle, police said. Walters' vehicle, meanwhile, went airborne and started to roll into the opposing lane, where it struck a westbound 2012 Toyota Corolla driven by Haley Morris, 20, of Sarver. Walters' Jeep went over Morris' car, police said, collapsing the car's roof and pinning Morris inside. Middlesex and Saxonburg volunteer firefighters were called and had to cut the driver's door off the car to reach Morris, who was knocked unconscious. She later regained consciousness before a medical helicopter flew her to AGH. Ambulances took Walters and Kapus' passenger, his wife, Linda Kapus, 61, to the same hospital. All the occupants in the vehicles were wearing seats belts. The crash closed the road for about 90 minutes. Police said Walters faces a ticket for careless driving.
