MARS — The borough has a new mayor.

At a special meeting Tuesday, council appointed Terry Onufer to serve one year, completing the term of Richard Settlemire, who died following an illness Oct. 26.
Council voted 6-1 in favor of Onufer, who was not at the meeting, to serve as mayor until January 2014, when the winner of the November 2013 general election will be sworn in.
In total, there were five candidates for the mayor’s job: Gregg Hartung, Ed McCaul, Dave Merriman, Sarah Trugan and Onufer. McCaul got the single council vote that did not go to Onufer.
Michael Flemming, council president, said the vote was new territory for Mars, as Settlemire had served as mayor for so long.
“But I have found that when there is a need, this community steps up and that is no different now,” Flemming said. “We usually have more seats than names. It’s kind of fun to have it be the other way around.
“Dick (Settlemire) loved to ring Mars’ bell and was proud of this community, and I’m sure that we are all going to work to carry on his tradition,” he added.
